Belmont Shore Residents Association MINUTES BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING August 14, 2008 The meeting was called to order by President Mike Ruehle at 6:00 pm. The members of the Executive Board present were: Heather Altman, Vice President Terence Endersen, Amber Lee, Marvin Jones, Jim Lazarus, Secretary Jeff Miller, President Mike Ruehle, and Treasurer Laura Spence. Executive Board members John Forstrom, Merodie Gentile, and Heidi Van Horn were absent. Twenty-nine additional BSRA members and visitors were present. Secretary Jeff Miller reported the mailing of the notice of the annual general membership meeting and Executive Board election on August 1. The cost of the mailing was less than $100 and $670 in membership renewals have been received in response to the mailing, along with an additional $105 in donations. Membership renewals totaling $110 were received in July. Treasurer Laura Spence reported a balance of $2,883.89 in the association checking account. Nancy Buchanan announced the next BSBA Stroll and Savor event scheduled for August 20 - 21 and a sidewalk sale August 22 - 24. The car show will be September 7 and the Christmas Parade will be December 6, with the theme "Winter Water Wonderland". Scott Jones spoke about his organization, We Love Long Beach, and described some of their past and future events. He said the purpose of the group is to foster communication among neighbors. Their next breakfast event is Saturday and their next barbecue is September 27 in Bixby Park. He issued an invitation to all residents to attend any of their events. LBPD Lieutenant Ken Rosenthal announced the next Coffee with the Commander scheduled for 6 pm on August 20 at Polly's Bakery Cafe, 4680 E. Los Coyotes Diagonal. He addressed questions from the audience and warned of a money collection scam currently operating in the area. He did not have information on a recently reported business robbery on Second Street. Jeanette Gavin, the designated residents' representative on the Parking Commission, reported $3,000 spent for parking meters at the library. Recent work accomplished by the commission includes replacement of trash can lids, tree trimming, and an increase in the frequency of sidewalk steam cleaning. The next commission meeting will be August 21. Julie Maleki of Councilmember DeLong's office announced the next Third Council District lunchtime meeting scheduled for August 21. The speaker will be the Director of Financial Management. President Mike Ruehle announced the receipt of the invoice for the association's liability insurance policy. A motion was approved unanimously to pay the invoice, which is for $1,451.00. Jeff Miller noted the October BSRA meeting date coincides with Yom Kippur and moved the meeting be changed to the following Thursday, October 16. The motion was approved unanimously. Mike Ruehle commended Dave Roseman, City of Long Beach Traffic Engineer, for his work in eliminating extra red-tipped curbs on Division Street and for improving safety by installing traffic signal filters. Jeff Miller announced the General Membership meeting and Executive Board elections in September and explained the nomination and election process. Mike Ruehle announced the scheduling of the hearing for the four zoning code changes for Belmont Shore at the City Council meeting August 19. Jeff Miller reported no new activity or construction visible at Cabo Cantina. Arnold Tchira expressed appreciation to the Executive Board members for the work they have accomplished over the last year. The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm.
